The Cannington Mine is a major underground silver, lead and zinc operation located in North-West Queensland, about 200km south-east of Mount Isa in the McKinlay Shire. The mine is owned and operated by South32 and began production in 1997 after the deposit was discovered by BHP in 1990.

Cannington is widely regarded as one of the world’s largest producers of silver and lead. The operation consists of an underground hard-rock mine and a surface processing plant where ore is crushed, ground and processed through flotation and leaching to produce high-grade lead and zinc concentrates containing significant silver.

Mining is carried out using underground long-hole open stoping methods, targeting sulphide mineralisation hosted in Proterozoic metamorphic rocks.

The concentrates produced at the mine are transported by road to a rail facility near Cloncurry and then shipped to the Port of Townsville for export to international smelters.
