The Cameby Downs Mine is an open-cut thermal coal operation located about 25km north-east of Chinchilla within the Surat Basin. The mine produces thermal coal used primarily for electricity generation in domestic and international markets.
Mining at Cameby Downs is carried out using conventional open-cut methods, including drilling and blasting followed by truck-and-shovel extraction of coal seams. The coal is processed through an on-site coal handling and preparation plant before being transported by rail for export through the Port of Brisbane.
The operation was developed by Cameby Downs Coal, a subsidiary of Japan’s Yancoal Australia, and commenced production in 2010. The project was designed as a long-life mine targeting relatively shallow coal seams within the Surat Basin.
Cameby Downs is considered one of the key coal operations in southern Queensland, contributing to the state’s thermal coal exports while supporting employment and economic activity in the Western Downs region.
