The Byerwen mine is a large open-cut metallurgical coal operation located in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, about 20km west of Glenden and about 140km south-west of Mackay. The mine produces high-quality hard coking coal used primarily in steelmaking and is one of the newer large-scale coal developments in the region.

The project is operated by Byerwen Coal Pty Ltd, a joint venture between QCoal Group and Japanese steel producer JFE Steel. Mining is carried out using conventional open-cut methods, including drilling, blasting, and truck-and-shovel extraction of coal seams within the Permian coal measures of the Bowen Basin.

Coal extracted from the mine is processed at an on-site coal handling and preparation plant before being transported by rail along the Goonyella rail system to export terminals at the Port of Hay Point near Mackay.

Production at Byerwen began in 2017 and has steadily increased as additional pits have been developed. The operation represents a significant contributor to Queensland’s metallurgical coal export industry and supports employment and economic activity across the Bowen Basin region.
