The Bluff mine is an open-cut coal operation located in Queensland’s southern Bowen Basin, about 20km east of Blackwater and near the township of Bluff in Central Queensland. The mine targets pulverised coal injection (PCI) coal, a product used primarily in steelmaking as a partial substitute for coke in blast furnaces.
Mining at Bluff has been conducted using conventional surface mining methods, including drilling and blasting followed by truck-and-shovel extraction of coal seams within the Permian-aged coal measures of the Bowen Basin. The site is strategically positioned adjacent to the Blackwater rail system, allowing coal to be transported by rail to export terminals at the Port of Gladstone for shipment to international steel producers.
The project began producing coal in 2019 and was later acquired by Bowen Coking Coal, which restarted operations in 2022 after a period of suspension. Mining ceased again in late 2023 and the site is currently on care and maintenance, although remaining coal resources could support future extraction if market conditions improve.
An agreement was reached in February 2026 for the site to be sold to Maverick M Australia (controlled by UK-registered Meta Mines Investments).
