The Aquila Mine is an underground metallurgical coal operation located in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, about 25km north-west of Middlemount. The mine was developed as a replacement for the nearby Grasstree Mine and is operated by Anglo American as part of the Capcoal complex.
Aquila extracts high-quality hard coking coal used primarily in steelmaking. The operation uses longwall mining methods, where large mechanised equipment shears coal from a continuous underground seam while hydraulic supports hold up the roof. This technique allows efficient extraction of large volumes of coal while maintaining safety and productivity.
Coal from Aquila is processed through the Capcoal Coal Handling and Preparation Plant before being transported by rail to the Port of Dalrymple Bay/Hay Point near Mackay for export to international steel producers.
The mine represents a significant long-term investment in the Bowen Basin and supports hundreds of jobs in the Middlemount region, contributing to Queensland’s metallurgical coal export industry.
