Alpha Torbanite Project

The Alpha Torbanite Project is a mineral resource located near the town of Alpha within the Galilee Basin region. The project focuses on deposits of torbanite, a type of oil shale rich in organic matter that can be processed to produce hydrocarbons and other chemical products.

Torbanite differs from conventional coal in that it contains high concentrations of hydrogen-rich organic material known as alginite. When heated through a process known as retorting, the rock can yield oil-like substances that may be refined into fuels or industrial chemicals.

The Alpha deposit is known to contain significant torbanite-bearing layers within sedimentary rocks of the Galilee Basin. Exploration and historical studies have examined the potential for developing the resource as a source of synthetic oil or specialty carbon products.

Although the project has not been developed commercially, it represents an unusual geological resource in Queensland.
