Metarock outlines impact of shake-up across Anglo sites

Metarock has outlined expected changes in manning levels for contractor Mastermyne at Anglo American-owned sites in the workforce shake-up forced by the underground fire at Grosvenor mine. Metarock in July outlined its concerns that the group would face a significant number of redundancies within its ranks after Anglo American issued a notice to suspend the contractor’s services at the crippled Grosvenor site. With Anglo working to offer its own permanent Grosvenor workforce redeployment opportunities, Metarock also anticipated an adverse impact on Mastermyne’s manning levels at the mining company's other Bowen Basin operations. Metarock announced this week that Mastermyne had executed a six-month extension in relation to its Moranbah North and Grosvenor contracts, taking them through to April 5 next year. Mastermyne’s primary services at Grosvenor remain suspended, although about 18 employees are involved in mine sealing and recovery activities there. Metarock said Mastermyne's Moranbah North numbers were expected to remain broadly in line with current levels, about 225 roles, although manning levels and equipment requirements were not guaranteed by Anglo. Mastermyne has executed a variation extending its services at Anglo's Aquila mine to the end of next month. But its manning levels at the site are scheduled to reduce to 31 roles in that period from about 70 roles. An Anglo American spokeswoman said permanent Grosvenor mine workers had already begun redeployment or secondments to other Anglo American operations in the Bowen Basin. "This was achieved through an industry-first employment working group comprising representatives from the Mining & Energy Union, Collieries' Staff and Officials Association, Electrical Trades Union and Australian Manufacturing Workers Union to align on ongoing employment and stability for all those impacted," she said. "A Resources Jobs Hub has also been developed to help connect the remaining impacted staff and contractors with more than 170 career opportunities across the broader resources industry already listed." She said a dedicated team on site at Grosvenor was focused on maintenance and ongoing sealing activities, with all atmospheric monitoring still trending positively. Weekly collaboration continued with Resource Safety and Health Queensland and the site's industry safety and health representatives (ISHRs) on the sealing process, she said. "This is occurring in parallel with mine re-entry planning with Resource Safety and Health Queensland and the Queensland Mines Rescue Service."
