Jobs pitch as Carmichael continues ramp-up

Carmichael mine owner Bravus and its contractors are pitching for more workers in a tight market as operations at the Central Queensland coal site ramp up. It comes as the National Skills Commission’s 2022 Skills Priority List shows occupations central to resources and energy operations face serious shortages including mining engineers, geologists, drillers, earthmover operators and trades workers. “The aim of our recruitment campaign is to find a pipeline of people to fill operator and skilled trades positions at our Carmichael mine,” a Bravus Mining and Resources spokeswoman said. She said the mine continued to safely and efficiently ramp up to its constructed level of production, which was in the order of 10 million tonnes per annum. “As we ramp up, we’re delighted to continue to offer roles for experienced truck, dozer, grader, and loader operators and tradespeople through our mining services contractor MacKellar Group," the spokeswoman said. “We believe coal will be a vital part of a sustainable energy mix for decades to come, and anyone interested in joining the team at Carmichael should look to apply through the Carmichael Jobs portal.” The Townsville Bulletin reports that local business representatives have been told another 260 workers are needed. The Carmichael mine, 160km north-west of Clermont, holds environmental approvals for production of up to 60 million tonnes per annum. Amid high thermal coal prices, Adani natural resources business chief executive officer Vinay Prakash spoke in May of the potential to lift output to 25 million to 30 million tonnes in the next two to three years. Bravus is replacing Adani Australia as the name of the corporate umbrella covering the group’s five distinct companies in regional Australia - Bravus Mining and Resources, the Rugby Run solar farm, Bowen Rail Company, Abbot Point Operations, and the North Queensland Export Terminal. Bravus executive director Samir Vora said the brand change reflected the mature Australian identity of the local parts of the Adani Group’s global business. “While the new name acknowledges the maturity of our Australian operations, Bravus will also continue to acknowledge and celebrate the ongoing achievements of the Adani Group," he said. “We have invested more than $7 billion in Australia, more than any other Indian company, and have demonstrated an enduring commitment to this nation over more than a decade of good times and bad. “We’re here for the long-term and will remain at the forefront of growing international bilateral trade between Australia and India for the benefit of both nations.
