BMA has halted operations across its Central Queensland sites after a worker was killed in a two-vehicle crash at the Peak Downs coal mine this morning.

Police were called just after 5am to the crash, with one man declared deceased at the scene and another man transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

BMA described the incident as a devastating tragedy which would be felt across BMA, BHP and the entire resources sector.

“We are providing support to the families and loved ones involved,” a company spokesman said.

“BMA has ceased operations across all our sites for 24 hours to support authorities and enable our people to reflect and refocus on safe ways of working.”

Resources Safety and Health Queensland chief executive officer Claire Cooper said preliminary information indicated two vehicles collided at the site. 

“RSHQ has deployed investigators and coal inspectors to site and is working closely with Queensland Police Service and Queensland Ambulance Service to respond to the incident,” she said. 

“Our thoughts are with the worker’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.” 

Queensland Resources Council (QRC) chief executive officer Janette Hewson said the peak group was deeply saddened by the death this morning.

“QRC expresses its deepest condolences to the family of the worker killed,” she said.

“The industry’s thoughts are with the injured worker, family, friends and work colleagues of both men and the first responders involved.

“Safety is and will always remain the highest priority for the resources industry.”

Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dale Last said his thoughts were with the friends, workmates and family of those involved and the emergency services that attended.

“Everyone deserves to go to work and come home safely,” he said
