Enhanced airport experience as Cairns flight figures lift

Key features of Cairns Airport’s $55 million international terminal upgrade are being unveiled as passenger figures reach the highest level in almost 20 years. One of the terminal’s two new large baggage belts began operating this week and people departing from the international terminal can now take advantage of a newly opened airport lounge experience. Operated by Escape Lounges, the space offers premium facilities and complimentary dining in comfort. It comes as international passenger figures track toward 760,000 for this financial year, a number not seen since 2008. Cairns Airport chief executive officer Richard Barker said the airport was also preparing to welcome two new international routes; Jetstar’s direct flights from Christchurch and Fiji Airways’ services to Nadi. "These year-round services will inject a combined 125,000 seats into the market each year,” he said. “We are also heading into the busy Easter school holiday period, and the commencement of Air New Zealand’s annual seasonal service from Auckland." Significant international conferences were also scheduled in Cairns during the coming months, which would bring thousands of business travellers to the region, he said. "The new Escape Lounge will be a welcome addition for those visitors, along with holidaymakers and locals who like to relax and recharge before a flight,” he said. Credit: Bang Media Escape Lounges are accessible to all travellers, regardless of airline or ticket class, and both pre-booked and walk-in payment options are available. The terminal upgrade is due for completion at the end of 2025. The first stage, completed last year, included an overhaul of the check-in and arrivals areas with new flooring, escalators and elevators, replacement of check-in and hire car counters and installation of four glass airbridges. The final construction phase includes installation of the second baggage belt, refurbishment of the departures area with new flooring and seating, remodelled bathrooms, and dining and retail enhancements.
