Dawson South deal adds $200m to Macmahon order book

Macmahon Holdings is finalising a contract worth about $200 million to provide surface mining services for Dawson South mine near Moura in Central Queensland.

Dawson South is part of the Dawson metallurgical coal operation, which is a joint venture between Anglo American and Japan’s Mitsui Group.

Macmahon’s contract starts in July 2021 and runs for three years.

The contractor said signing of the mining services agreement was expected to occur in the near future.

“We are very pleased to be selected for the Dawson South operation by Anglo American, a leading global mining company,” Macmahon chief executive officer and managing director Michael Finnegan said.

“We look forward to working very closely with our new client to ensure a smooth transition period and continuity of safe operations. This new project further strengthens our growing east coast presence.”

The company’s Queensland coalfields contract wins last year included a $250 million contract for work at the Foxleigh coal mine near Middlemount in Central Queensland.

The open-cut, truck and excavator operation is owned by QMetco (70 per cent), Posco Australia, and Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Australia.

Macmahon has been providing open-cut mining services at QCoal’s Byerwen site since 2017 and last year secured a $700 million contract for an expansion and three-year extension of its work there.

Macmahon has been providing open-cut mining services at QCoal’s Byerwen site since 2017.
