GenusPlus wins $16m in Shoalwater Bay work Power and telecommunications infrastructure provider GenusPlus Group has won a contract with Laing O’Rourke for the Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative (ASMTI) training area at Shoalwater Bay. The power installation contract has a value of about $16 million. GenusPlus said the contract was scheduled to commence immediately and be completed over a period of approximately six months. The scope of work includes the installation, testing and commissioning of high voltage electrical cables and associated equipment. GenusPlus has established a new Central Queensland branch in Rockhampton that is expected to facilitate expansion into the region’s growing and developing industries. Disaster mitigation funds open to councils Communities in high risk, cyclone-prone coastal areas in North and Far North Queensland will benefit from a new funding program aimed at lowering the cost of insurance in the north. Minister for the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) Steven Miles said the State Government had made $10 million available to help eligible councils in northern Queensland reduce their disaster risk with the aim to lower the cost of insurance for local residents. “The funding is available to 33 councils and Weipa Town Authority in high risk, cyclone-prone coastal areas with population centres within 50km of the coastline, from Bundaberg all the way up to the Northern Territory border," he said. Eligible projects could include initiatives to encourage locals to make their homes more cyclone or flood resilient, studies into a community’s disaster risk, new or upgraded drainage systems, storm water detention, levees and culverts, or the design of larger infrastructure or non-infrastructure projects to help reduce the impact of future natural disaster events. Eligible councils can apply for up to $2 million through the program, with expressions of interest closing in February 2022. Funding boost for regional transport projects Local councils and state and territory governments can apply for new funding under the Bridges Renewal Program (BRP) and Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP). The Federal Government has committed $250 million under these programs to improve heavy vehicle safety, keep freight moving and create new economic opportunities and jobs. For the first time, the BRP and HVSPP are running concurrently so that applicants can access the right program, for the right project at the right time. Applications will be assessed on an ongoing basis. And rural and regional projects can now apply for funding to cover up to 80 per cent of the total project cost. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said changes to the program guidelines would give applicants better access to funding, ensuring the road upgrades Australia needs can be funded and delivered. Captain Cook Highway safety works underway Works to widen the Captain Cook Highway south of Craiglie have kicked off. This $5 million project is jointly funded on an 80:20 basis by the Australian and Queensland governments under Tranche 2 of the Road Safety Program. Other projects funded under the Road Safety Program in Far North Queensland include: Palmerston Highway – Innisfail to Ravenshoe, $2 million to widen shoulders to create safer roadsides and the installation of guardrail at high-risk locations.Gulf Developmental Road - $2.5 million for widening and sealing upgrade along the Gulf Developmental Road to create two lanes.Mossman Daintree Road -$8 million for shoulder widening and wide centre line treatments north of Mossman.
