Company charged over 2021 Curragh coal mine death

Coronado Curragh has been charged over the 2021 death of Clark Peadon, who was fatally injured while working in the Blackwater district coal mine’s dragline operations. Parent company Coronado Global Resources said it was reviewing the charge but would not comment on the case while it was before the court. 'The safety of our people is our most important priority and we are committed to working hard every day to create an injury-free workplace,' the company said in a statement to the ASX noting the prosecution. 'We acknowledge the significant impact this incident has had on Clark’s family and we again express our deepest sympathies to Clark’s family and his co-workers.' Coronado Curragh has been charged under the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act with failing to meet its obligation to ensure that the risk to workers at the mine was at an acceptable level. The matter is due to be mentioned at Blackwater Magistrates Court on January 23. The incident happened at the Curragh mine complex on November 21, 2021, when Mr Peadon (pictured left) was performing cable relocation work on a dragline. Related: Inspectorate issues alert after dragline death A Coal Inspectorate report on the incident shortly after said preliminary investigations suggested Mr Peadon undertook work using the cable tractor while the dragline was stationary. But it appeared he either re-entered or remained in the operational swing boundary when the dragline became operational. “The worker was struck by the dragline propel shoe, resulting in him sustaining fatal injuries,” the Inspectorate reported. The Mining and Energy Union has welcomed the prosecution over the death of Mr Peadon, an experienced dragline operator and long-term union member. Vice president of the union's Curragh Lodge, Mr Peadon was described as a much-loved husband, father and community member. MEU general vice president Stephen Smyth said he hoped the legal action against the company was the first step in achieving justice and accountability for Mr Peadon's untimely death. “Mine owners and operators must always fulfil their obligations to keep their workers safe," he said. “While some time has passed since his death, the pain felt by Clark's family and friends still persists. “We owe it to Clark and his loved ones to do everything in our power to achieve justice and accountability for his death.” You may also like: https://industryqld.com.au/contractor-charged-with-industrial-manslaughter-over-crinum-mine-death/
