Break out the bubbles – kudos for inspirational women

Queensland's 'Grandmother of Flotation' is among nine Australian women whose contributions have seen them named in the WIM100 list honouring inspirational women in mining worldwide. Glencore Copper general manager, metallurgical processing Virginia Lawson (pictured right) is described as being highly respected in the field of mineral processing, including for championing new technology. Affectionately referred to as the ‘Abuela de Flotacionâ’ (Grandmother of Flotation), her enthusiasm, technical capability and hard work has been instrumental in shifting industry opinion on flotation technology. Now based in Brisbane, Ms Lawson set a precedent while at Mount Isa as the first mother to return to an operational role on part-time basis. She is credited with playing a crucial role in developing policies and procedures for women returning to the workforce and was a key contributor to the launch of Glencore Australia’s internal diversity and inclusion program. “I am proud of the combination of projects I have designed, constructed and operated, as well as the people I have mentored and developed along the way," Ms Lawson said. "And I am proud of doing this alongside raising four children.” Compiled by Women in Mining UK, the WIM100 publication celebrates 100 women from around the world whose impactful contributions have strengthened and made the resources industry more inclusive and sustainable. Associate Professor Anita Parbhakar-Fox from The University of Queensland’s Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) has also been named among the WIM100 cohort this year. Associate Professor Parbhakar-Fox is the founding leader of the Mine Waste Transformation through Characterisation (MIWATCH) research group at SMI’s WH Bryan Mining Geology Research Centre. She is also deputy director of the ARC Training Centre for Critical Resources for the Future, a collaboration with the University of Western Australia, Australia National University and the University of Adelaide. “I am absolutely delighted to have made this list; it represents so many things - first recognition for mine waste geoscience - MIWATCH have worked hard to get the message out that we need to challenge industry practices when it comes to linear disposal,” Associate Professor Parbhakar-Fox said. “Through the work we have undertaken we are highlighting the opportunity for embedding circular economy principles for mine waste across the life of mine. Associate Professor Anita Parbhakar-Fox at the old Mary Kathleen mine site in North-West Queensland. “On a personal note, it makes all the personal sacrifices worth it to play a part in building towards a better future for the next generation - I must thank SMI, my collaborators, and my team MIWATCH for their continued support. “I am fortunate to have a great network of female colleagues and collaborators which is important to facilitate change.” Stanmore Resources business improvement principal Ashley McCarthy-Griffiths has also been honoured, along with BHP global head of Indigenous and local procurement Jessica Simpson. The QIM100 also includes OptiFroth Solutions principal metallurgist and geometallurgical specialist Bianca Newcombe and Fortescue group manager for China relations Julie (Xiuli) Song. Other Australians on the list include geologist Susie Corlett, who is credited with spearheading the implementation of ESG practices through global roles in mining finance and partnering with multilateral organisations. She holds board positions with Iluka Resources, Mineral Resources and Aurelia Metals. AROSE (Australian Remote Operations for Space and Earth) consortium director Michelle Keegan and International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) co-chief operating officer and director of social performance global Danielle Martin are also recognised in the QIM100 ranks.
