Boost for Brisbane battery tech development

Brisbane-headquartered AnteoTech has attracted federal backing for an $11.1 million project to commercialise its new lithium-ion battery anode technology. The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has committed almost $4 million to the three-year project. This aims to commercialise AnteoTech’s proprietary silicon anode technology, reduce battery storage costs and enable longer driving ranges for EVs. The company said it would involve the expansion of its Brisbane production facility, including new manufacturing equipment. An initial technical objective was to enhance its Generation 1 Ultra High Silicon Anode prototype, currently under development through the Queensland Critical Minerals Battery Technology Fund, by creating a Generation 2 version, AnteoTech said. This new prototype would exceed the current target of 1000 cycles at 80 per cent capacity retention, meeting the demands of ultra-high performance applications, hybrid and electric vehicles, and large-scale battery storage systems deployed across Australia and globally. ARENA chief executive officer Darren Miller said the project represented an investment in homegrown battery technology with the potential to change energy storage on a global scale. "As we push towards our net zero ambitions, we need to ensure we have enough energy storage so that we can use renewable energy when we need it at any time of the day, whether that be for industry, homes or the growing switch to electric vehicles,” Mr Miller said. "Innovation in storage technologies is going to help us achieve this, and AnteoTech’s technology could create batteries higher in density, while utilising cheap abundant materials that could bring costs down. "We’re hopeful this technology has the potential to be quickly integrated in existing manufacturing processes so that the benefits can be accessed by customers in a timely manner.” Related: $20m plan to supercharge NQ battery chemicals venture AnteoTech chief executive officer David Radford said the ARENA grant would accelerate and develop their product portfolio. "We are thrilled to receive this grant funding to accelerate and further develop our product portfolio of high silicon containing anodes for large EV and storage batteries," he said. "This is our second grant this year and represents the execution of our strategy to pursue non-dilutive funding and supplement our internal resources, to fast-track new AnteoTech products." The ARENA funding will help AnteoTech progress to a larger scale of prototyping. The project will see AnteoTech install new electrode coating equipment and pouch cell testing equipment at its existing site in Brisbane. AnteoTech will then commence a testing program, including providing prototype anodes to potential customers. AnteoTech expects technical work on the program to commence in November, with design and construction of the Brisbane site in early 2025. The whole ARENA project is due for completion in late 2027.
