Alpha HPA forges ahead on multiple fronts

Alpha HPA is advancing concept work on a potential second large-scale facility overseas as earthworks roll out for stage two of its HPA First high-purity aluminium project in Gladstone. The newly named Alpha Polaris project would see an additional plant developed adjacent to Orica’s Carseland manufacturing facility in Alberta, Canada. The company said market signals from ongoing customer engagement indicated the timing was right to commence further study on the potential expansion of its operating footprint into North America. “We continue to be pleased to continue to advance the business on multiple fronts," Alpha managing director Rimas Kairaitis said. "On the product marketing front, the expanding interest from the semiconductor and the direct lithium extraction (DLE) sectors are particularly encouraging. "We also very pleased to be advancing concept work on a potential second large-scale facility.” Alpha HPA said stage two earthworks at Gladstone were progressing on schedule, with retaining wall emplacement and site fill complete. Raw water connection is complete and process, trade waste and stormwater ponds under construction. The company has secured a $400 million Australian Government debt facility and raised $180 million in equity to fund the 10ha stage two development. At full scale, the facility will be capable of producing more than 10,000 tonnes of high-purity aluminium products per year, creating 120 ongoing local jobs on top of the 300 jobs during construction. Related: Alpha HPA achieves lift-off for next stage of development On the marketing front, Alpha said it was very pleased with the volume of counterparties engaging with it on product qualification, with steady month-to-month increases in the number of end-users and the size and number of qualification test orders. Recent product marketing metrics include: 170 test and/or sales orders received since Stage 2 FID (May 2024) More than 3000kg of sales and test orders under manufacture 19 sales orders serviced since FID. Steady conversion of market engagement to small-scale sales is a critical qualification stage-set to finalising larger volume orders and offtakes Five Letters of Intent (LOIs) – issued in draft for customer review Alpha noted the introduction to the Australian Parliament of the Future Made in Australia Bill, which would establish a new refundable tax offset to support the processing of critical minerals (including high-purity alumina) in Australia. If passed, this was expected to have a material positive impact on the financial returns of the HPA First project, it said.
