Alfred tipped to cross coast as category 2 system

Tropical Cyclone Alfred is forecast to cross the South-East Queensland coast at category 2 strength late on Thursday or early Friday.
A cyclone watch is in place for coastal areas from Sandy Cape to Grafton, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, and Byron Bay.
The system was located 630km east of Brisbane and 630km east of Maroochydore at 10am today, with sustained winds near the centre of 95km per hour.
Gales with damaging wind gusts to 120km/h are expected to develop along the South-East Queensland and north-eastern New South Wales coastal fringes and island communities between Tewantin and Grafton on Wednesday.
Damaging surf leading to significant beach erosion remains likely for the open beaches between Sandy Cape and Yamba.
